The World Famous Ashdown Mummers came into being in 1973 when a few members of The Ashdown Forest Morris Men and a couple of mates decided to perform a play. For the next few years the Mummers' Play was performed as part of the AFMM's Christmas Tour which included Crawley old town, West Sussex, the site of our first performance. Over the years the Mummers gradually became a separate entity, virtually a reunion event for old friends who had moved away from the area to get together again in East Grinstead and Forest Row.

The play has been performed every year since 1973. In the early years this was around the pubs in the Ashdown Forest, but later in Brighton and Lewes, East Sussex. See our events page for details.

We started by learning the script of the play from the village of Compton in West Sussex. it is many years since any of us have re-read the script; newer members have never even seen one! we have allowed the play to develop over the years, so it has now become our own living tradition.

The play can only be performed at Christmastide. So we are unable to perform the play at any other time of the year, if we are inspired to get together, or are invited to an event. To overcome this problem and to add another dimension to our performances, we added Morris dances in the Border Tradition of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire and a few other obscure village dance traditions from around the country.
